Since 1970, Riemer Reinsma was a lexicographer, editor-in-chief, publicist on language and advisor on language usage.
Since about 2005 he has specialized in onomastics (particularly toponymy).
He is an advisor and permanent contributor to the monthly magazine Onze Taal.

Reinsma studied Dutch language and literature at the Universiteit van Amsterdam.
In 1970 he obtained his doctorate with a dissertation on pictures of the future in Dutch literature.

From 1970-’73 he was editor at the Woordenboek der Nederlandsche Taal (a historical dictionary of the Dutch language).
After that he was employed successively by the publishing companies Elsevier and Het Spectrum as project manager dictionaries.
He is an advisor to Genootschap Onze Taal (Society Our Language).
Since 1995 he has been working freelance.
He was for many years a contributor to Vrij Nederland, NRC Handelsblad and the radio program De Taalshow (The Language Show); and was an advisor to Het Spectrum and Sdu Uitgevers.
From 1994 until ’96 he was editor-in-chief of the Van Dale Groot Spel van de Nederlandse Taal (a language game).
For the Van Dale Idioomwoordenboek (on expressions and proverbs) (1999) Riemer Reinsma provided the etymological explanations.
From 2000 until 2009 he was editor-in-chief of TaalActief, a language magazine for professionals.
